Norris, McLaughlin & Marcus: A great company that rediscovered a great city

X Norris McLaughlin & Marcus Downtown AllentownDecember 8, 2016  /  Here in Downtown Allentown, there are several businesses with rich histories. A great example is Norris, McLaughlin & Marcus PA, one of the Lehigh Valley’s oldest and largest law firms. NMM traces its roots to 1913 when it was founded as Butz & Rupp in Downtown Allentown. There were a few name changes, most notably from 1989 to 2009 when the firm was known as Tallman, Hudders & Sorrentino PC, and a move out to the suburbs. The firm then merged with Norris McLaughlin & Marcus and today provides a wide variety of law services (including general business law, heath care, real estate, corporate and personal tax, hospitality, intellectual property and labor and employment law) to clients in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Its local clients include such notable organizations as Lehigh Valley Health Network and BB&T Bank.

NMM employs more than 270 people, including 73 in Pennsylvania. When it came time to expand its state headquarters, NMM remembered its roots in Downtown Allentown and decided to check out the city’s renaissance. What they found sparked a lot of interest for a wide array for reasons.

For one, Downtown Allentown is decidedly employee-friendly. For a company that sees its team as its most valuable resource—it was, after all, named to The Morning Call’s 2016 Lehigh Valley Top Workplaces—offering its staff a positive, comfortable environment in which to work was essential. Secondly, NMM values quality and is conscious of cost, and City Center Lehigh Valley was offering a turnkey, Class A workspace that met their needs and budget. Another huge plus was being able to set up shop in the advantageous Neighborhood Improvement Zone (NIZ), a 30-year economic incentive zone driving enormous value to tenants.

Great opportunities + great neighborhood = great ROI

3CC.June.2015.2In 2015, after a two-decade downtown absence, NMM moved into Three City Center on Hamilton Street between Fifth and Sixth streets. Beyond the geographical move, NMM relocated to a dynamic environment that’s quickly becoming the region’s business services and financial services hub. Today, NMM sees the possibilities of networking with some of the most established and up-and-coming companies in the Valley. The firm can seize the business development opportunities happening here among forward-thinking and growing companies.

For businesses like NMM, the vibrant office neighborhood is something that can’t be replicated in suburban office parks. Restaurants, bars, shops, entertainment, arts venues and the state-of-the-art LVHN Fitness center are all within a few minutes’ walk of NMM’s building. According to NMM chairman and partner Matthew R. Sorrentino, the transformational redevelopment and PPL Center arena, home of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms minor league ice hockey team, were big pluses in their decision to move.

There’s also the residential quality of life here (see the U.S. News & World Report article listing Allentown as one of the top places to live in the country) that helps keep a strong workforce happy and lure top talent. And there is a quickly growing upscale residential community, including STRATA Flats (as well as STRATA East and STRATA Symphony coming soon), for those who want a fun, exciting address within walking distance to work.

Satisfied employees perform better, are more dedicated and attract more talent. That is exactly the kind of thing that helps boost your bottom line.

Downtown Allentown is fun…and affordable

Beyond the great amenities, Sorrentino says the NIZ address provides the firm with a cost savings that allows it to invest more in people and grow the business. Even putting the NIZ benefits aside, Downtown Allentown is a vibrant urban environment that costs a fraction of what many companies spend in New York or Philadelphia for similar spaces and amenities. Firms like Norris McLaughlin are able to pass those cost savings onto their clients.

Downtown Allentown is fertile ground for organizations to grow bigger and better. And City Center can deliver space as demand requires, with capacity to meet the needs of most entities. Will your business be next?
